Mini-Update: MPC Feedback, Updated Timeline + Meet Us at PAXU!
4 months ago – Fri, Nov 14, 2025 at 10:16:10 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

📝 MPC (Manufacturer Production Copy) Feedback

This part of the process is always exciting and terrifying in equal measure. We received MPCs (Manufacturer Production Copies) from Gameland yesterday - a few days later than they predicted. We spent the afternoon examining everything in microscopic detail, and while the vast majority of the components were spot-on, we identified a few areas that need to be addressed and ultimately, we weren’t able to approve the MPCs.

We sent a detailed report to Gameland late yesterday evening so that they could review our feedback during the UK night-time; this allowed us to have a video call with the production team first thing this morning, discuss each item and agree on a plan of action. Everything we flagged this morning is already being addressed, but this will take time and as a result shipping and fulfilment will unfortunately need to be pushed back. We know this isn't what you were hoping to hear (we share your disappointment!), but we will always choose quality over speed; we're committed to creating the best product possible and we’re not going to settle for sending you anything other than that.

⌛ Updated Timeline

Gameland have estimated that rectifying these issues and getting another MPC to us will take 3-4 weeks. With the holidays looming and congested shipping routes at this time of year, at this stage it’s hard to say exactly when games will arrive in each region. There’s a chance that some backers in Asia might receive their copies this year (as these will be shipped ‘overland’, rather than via sea freight) but it’s looking likely that most backers will receive their pledges in early 2026.

As backers of projects ourselves, we understand that these delays can be frustrating. We promise that we’re doing everything we can to get your games to you. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll have a better idea of timescale and we’ll continue to keep you as up to date as we possibly can; in the meantime we really, really appreciate your patience.

😊 It's Not all Doom and Gloom!

When you’re looking for problems, it’s really easy to overlook all of the things that are wonderful, so here’s a rundown of what excited us about the MPCs!

👊 Punchboard Delamination Fixed

In the last update, we discussed the punchboard issues we had come across in the copy provided to us at Essen. We're very happy to report that there was no evidence of peeling in the copies that we received yesterday, so we won’t be needing to reprint 150,000 punchboards. Thank goodness!

✨ Foiled Boss Cards

We’re absolutely thrilled with how the foiled boss cards turned out. Opening the boss card deck feels like opening the best trading card pack ever; every card is a shiny! They have a very nostalgic ‘Team Rocket Pokémon card’ vibe, and they look fantastic stored inside the Boss Boxes.

📦 Packaging

This one’s a bit nerdy, but super important for making sure that your games get to you in pristine condition. The packaging of the games is excellent; we’ve upgraded the protection even further with a higher density foam in place of corner protectors, and Gameland’s drop tests show that the packages are able to stand up to some serious punishment, as you can see in the video below!

A packaged Hellstone pledge (banana for scale, at the request of André Banha)
Hellstone pledge packaging render. Top to bottom: High-density foam, promo booster packs, game box, high-density foam, Hellstone extras box, additional high-density foam, carton.
Gold pledge packaging render. Top to bottom: High-density foam, promo booster packs, game box, high-density foam, carton.

🎫 Meet Us at PAX Unplugged!

From Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd November, Chris and Matt will be at PAXU Unplugged in Philadelphia. If you’re at the show, please come and say hello – you’ll find us at booth 3646.

💬 Keeping You in the Loop

We’ll keep you updated as to the progress of production and fulfilment via mini-updates over the coming weeks, and we’ll provide ship tracking information as soon as games are loaded onto boats.

Also coming up in a future update will be a backer request – Pate asked “…Can we get an example on what different builds (melee, ranged, magic, summoner?) might look like in different phases of the game? Equipment, armor and notable items and action cards for each playstyle would be interesting…”. We think this is a great idea; we’re currently putting it together so keep your eyes peeled over the next few weeks.

🙏 Thank You!

Thank you so much for your support and for bearing with us while we navigate these final hurdles; we can’t wait for you to experience Terraria: The Board Game!

Until next time, Terrarians!

October 2025 Update: Spiel Essen Recap, Manufacturing Update with Photos + Deluxe Neoprene Player Mat Upgrade + Final Rulebook + Anticipated Timeline
4 months ago – Thu, Oct 30, 2025 at 08:32:21 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

This month, we’ve got a packed update covering production progress, highlights from our time at Spiel Essen, and an exciting improvement to the deluxe neoprene player boards included in the Hellstone Pledge. Let’s dig in!

🎲 Spiel Essen Recap

We’ve just returned from an incredible few days in Germany for Spiel Essen! A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, checked out the production sample of Terraria: The Board Game, and shared your enthusiasm for all things Terraria. Meeting so many of you in person was truly wonderful 😃

Massive thanks to our amazing demo team for helping us run the booth throughout the show. With over 220,000 visitors across four days, it was as exhausting as it was exhilarating, but it’s definitely one of our favourite events of the year!

Clockwise from top left: Leaving the office, entering the Channel Tunnel, Terraria at the Media Preview Show, our production sample in all its glory, the stand during the show and the quiet before the storm each day!

🏭 Manufacturing Nearing Completion!

Last month, we shared production photos of the game’s trays, dice, and miniatures. Since then, the factory has been busy producing all the cardboard components including cards, punchboards, and player reference sheets.

Clockwise from top let: Box lids before forming, top layers of the dual-layer player boards, foiled boss card sheets, packs of action cards and divider punchboards.

Deluxe Neoprene Upgrade

Developing the Hellstone Pledge deluxe player mats has been quite the journey; over eight months of testing, refining, and problem-solving! To our knowledge, no one has used dual-layer neoprene quite like this before.

Originally, we used traditional sublimation printing, but the colours weren’t vibrant enough, the detail was fuzzy and aligning the layers proved tricky. After lots of experimentation by the Gameland team, we’ve switched to a new approach: a thin PU top layer with UV printing.

This change gives us thicker and more vibrant mats with much higher resolution printing, plus laser-cut edges mean no fraying and thus no stitching required. The result feels like a true upgrade from the previous design, and we are really happy with the outcome.

Below is a comparison of the two approaches; it’s always worth spending a little extra time to get the very best outcome!

Push-Fit Bosses

At Spiel Essen, we received samples of the final mold-cast bosses, and they have turned out nicely! The modular, push-fit design is sturdy and satisfying to assemble and disassemble. Over the weekend, we rebuilt them hundreds of times, and they’ve held up perfectly with no loosening of the push-fit mechanism.

Biome Tile Punchboards

We expected the copy of the game provided to us at Essen to be a final MPC (Manufacturer Production Copy). During the show, we noticed that the laminate coating on the biome tiles was peeling; this would have been a major manufacturing issue requiring re-manufacture of all the affected components (over 150,000 punchboards), so we immediately met face-to-face with Gameland’s CEO, who was at the show, to investigate.

Thankfully, it turned out that the Essen copy was laminated using a different machine to the one used for final production. Gameland has confirmed this doesn’t affect the mass-production copies, but we’ll need to review another ‘true’ MPC before shipping, to ensure everything meets our high standards.

📖 Digital Rulebook

The game’s final rulebook is now available digitally here . Huge thanks to everyone who provided feedback on the pre-format version, and to our many external editors and playtesters who helped refine it. Seeing the printed rulebook at Essen made the game feel real!

👀 Something from the Archives

A couple of week ago, Chris unearthed his original design notebook from the very first weeks of the game’s development, over 2½ years ago! It’s fascinating to see how some ideas evolved while others, like the action point system and transparent cards for player progression, were there from day one.

Clockwise from top left: Chris' design notebook, early ideas for the player boards, an overview of the core Terraria principles, and how buildings might work.

⌛ Anticipated Timeline

Gameland have informed us that our final MPC (Manufacturer Production Copy) will be ready on 6th November, a few weeks later than they originally predicted. This is mainly due to delays in eProofs being provided to us and foiling processes taking longer than anticipated, for which Gameland have apologised - they are working diligently to finish the production run as quickly as possible, while maintaining the same high level of quality control.

If this MPC copy is 100% correct and can be approved, we have been informed that the games will be available for pickup from the factory (in China) around 15th November. Overground fulfilment to backers in Asia will begin immediately, and games to other regions will be loaded onto boats as soon as possible thereafter.

🌳 Keeping You in the Loop

We’ll keep you updated as to the progress of production and fulfilment via mini-updates over the coming weeks, and we’ll provide ship tracking information as soon as games are loaded onto boats.

Thank you so much for your support and patience; we are *so* close now and we can’t wait for you to experience what we’ve created!

Until next time, Terrarians!

September 2025 Update: Manufacturing Progress + Pictures, Fulfilment Partner Info, Meet Us at Essen 2025 + More!
5 months ago – Wed, Sep 24, 2025 at 06:03:28 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

This month, we’ve got an update on the rulebook, some pictures from the Gameland manufacturing team, information about our fulfilment partners, backer request items and more!

❗ IMPORTANT INFO: DO NOT IGNORE

Before we dive in, just a reminder that addresses will be locked and cards will be charged for shipping (and any applicable taxes) tomorrow - Thursday 25th September. See last week’s mini-update for details on how to check and change information if needed.

If the pending charge on your account looks higher than you were expecting, please see our August update about shipping costs and remember that the charge includes any applicable taxes (e.g. VAT) for your order (which are charged on the total cost of your pledge + shipping).

If your payment fails, you will receive an automatic email with instructions of how to rectify this. If a failed payment is not rectified by 15th October 2025, your pledge will not be included in our fulfilment plan.

If you haven’t yet filled in your BackerKit survey, this is your last chance. Once we have locked addresses, we will be unable to fulfil pledges for backers with incomplete surveys.

Right, with that out of the way, let’s dig in! 😀

🏭 Manufacturing is Go!

Production is underway - the Gameland team are hard at work manufacturing the games and have sent over some pictures, with more to follow soon! Plastics and neoprene generally come first as they take longer to make, followed by paper and cardboard components which are quicker to produce.

Big buckets o’ bosses, tonnes of trays and doodads full of dice!

It's wonderful to see the games being made - we’re so excited to show you the other components as they are manufactured! 🤩

📖 Rulebook Complete!

Last month, we published the pre-format version of the game’s rulebook; thank you to everyone who took time to read it and share feedback. Over 1500 backers reviewed the document and left hundreds of helpful comments – these have been used to make final edits to the document, and we’ve also added a commonly requested feature - a glossary. Sharing the rulebook was a fantastic way to ‘crowdsource’ final proofreading, and it’s something we’ll be doing for future games too.

This means by week’s end, all of the game’s print files will officially be in the hands of the manufacturer, and we couldn’t be more excited! 🥳

📤 Packing and Stacking

This is a game with lots of components, so we’ll be adding a packing guide to every copy of the game. This will show how trays are organised, how it all fits neatly in the box, and will feature a QR code to a video demonstration. We hope this will make unboxing and sorting your game a smooth and enjoyable experience! 😀

🙋 Backer Requests

We’ve gathered some backer requests below, plus miscellaneous bits and pieces that you might find interesting! First, an image of the wooden character pack:

Next are pictures of the final playmat (complete with a play-Matt holding it up!), plus a video we shared previously which shows the complimentary embroidered playmat bag:

For any backers who want to know how to open their promo booster packs without tearing them open, here’s a ‘how-to' guide, courtesy of the trading card world!

Finally, here are a selection of beautiful new component shots from Lee at Rising Dice. Thanks, Lee! 😀

🃏 Card Counts + Dimensions

Some of you have asked about final card counts and card dimensions for the purpose of sourcing your own card sleeves.

We wanted to make sure that we were in manufacturing before releasing final information so that we could be 100% sure of the details, but we’re now able to confirm this information. Even so, we strongly advise waiting until you have received your game to buy third-party card sleeves so that you can choose exactly what to order for your individual needs/ preferences.

The game will include:

174 Poker Cards (63.5 mm x 88.9 mm)

  • 112 action cards
  • 30 boss cards – if sleeved, use clear sleeves, not art sleeves
  • 32 chest cards (30 base game + 2 promo) – if sleeved, use clear sleeves, not art sleeves

If you are a Hellstone backer, you will be receiving 200 full art card sleeves: enough to sleeve all the action cards in the game, plus plenty of spares that you can keep for future or use with your favourite card games! As noted above, some poker-sized cards in the game (boss and chest cards) have information on both sides of the card and therefore should not be sleeved with these art sleeves.

297 Mini Cards (41 mm x 63 mm)

If sleeved, use clear sleeves, not art sleeves

  • 56 objective cards
  • 175 equipment cards (172 + 3 promo)
  • 66 consumable cards (64 base game + 2 promo)

As we have mentioned previously, we have designed the card box to hold sleeved poker + mini card cards - just remove the foam blocks provided.

Square Cards

The game’s square cards are designed to sit within the player board and shouldn’t be sleeved as it will adversely affect the way the cards’ function during gameplay.

🚚 Fulfilment Partners

A few backers have asked who will be shipping orders in their region - here’s a breakdown:

  • USA (contiguous + Alaska + Hawaii) + Mexico: Bridge Fulfilment
  • Canada: Currently being finalised
  • UK: Zatu Games
  • Europe 1+2: Meeples Group (located within the EU)
  • Asia 1+2: VFI Asia
  • Australia + New Zealand: Let’s Play Games

👀 See a Production Copy at Essen 2025!

From October 23rd to 26th, we’ll be showing a production copy of Terraria: The Board Game at Essen Spiel in Germany; the world’s largest tabletop game convention. If you’re coming to the show, we’d love to meet you; please stop by Hall 4, booth 4G425 (see a map here) to check it out!

The Paper Fort Games booth team at Essen Spiel 2024!

🐙 What’s That on the Horizon?

With Terraria: The Board Game now in the hands of our manufacturing and then logistics partners, our Terraria-related workloads will be a little lighter for a while. This means we’re able to focus some of our attention on our next project: the expansion for our first game, Cosmoctopus.

Don’t worry - this doesn’t mean we’re disappearing! We will still be fully engaged here, posting monthly updates, answering your questions, and responding to your comments as usual.

Cosmoctopus is an engine-building, tentacle-gathering game for 1 to 4 players - this expansion adds new cards, game modes and a brand-new celestial cephalopod: Prismoctopus! If you'd like to learn more, and be among the first to know when Cosmoctopus: Beyond the Inky Realm launches on October 14th, you can sign up for notifications here.

👋 We’ll be Back in October!

We’ll be back next month with more manufacturing progress, fulfilment information and an Essen convention recap. Don’t forget to check your shipping address and payment information before Thursday 25th September!

Thanks so much for your continued support and trust. We couldn’t do this without you and as always, we’re committed to keeping you in the loop every step of the way.

Mini-Update: 📢 REMINDER: Addresses Locked + Cards Charged for Shipping on Thursday 25th September
6 months ago – Thu, Sep 18, 2025 at 06:13:37 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

Addresses will be locked and cards will be charged for shipping (and any applicable taxes) on Thursday 25th September – 1 week from today.

Please ensure that your address and payment card details are correct before this date.

If you need to make changes, please follow these how-to guides:

We ask backers to update their own details to ensure that we don’t introduce any transcription errors, but if you are unable to make changes after following these guides, please contact BackerKit support at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us .

You can review the upcoming charges by logging into in your BackerKit survey. You’ll find a link to your survey in emails from BackerKit about the game. If you can’t find it, you can recover your survey link here: https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/

You’ll receive a final reminder email from BackerKit 48 hours before we lock addresses and charge cards.

If you are one of the 150 backers who has not yet filled in your BackerKit survey, this is your last chance. Once we have locked addresses, we will be unable to fulfil pledges for backers with incomplete surveys.

Personal Tax ID Numbers

As mentioned previously, since we sent out BackerKit surveys some regions have started requiring personal tax numbers for parcels delivered from a fulfilment centre outside a backer’s country. Based on discussions with fulfilment partners, the only backers we require this information from at this time are those based in Mexico; we’ll be emailing these backers directly in the next week. If information is required for any other regions, we will contact affected backers directly between now and fulfilment. If you don’t receive a request for information, we don’t require any additional Tax ID details from you.

That’s all for today; we’ll be back next week with our usual monthly update!

August 2025 Update: Rulebook, Shipping and Tariff Information, Final Components and More!
6 months ago – Thu, Aug 28, 2025 at 06:07:33 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

This month, we’re sharing shipping and tariff information, shots of the few remaining components that you haven’t yet seen, a chance to provide feedback on the game’s pre-format rulebook, and more!

Let’s dig in...

📅 Timeline Reminder

Just a reminder that in July’s update, we revised our estimated fulfilment to November 2025. You can read more about the reasons for that change in the update.

🎬 Updated Gameplay Video

Earlier, this week, we re-uploaded our playthrough featuring ChippyAlex and Hannah – this version is higher resolution and has been colour corrected, so the shots match more closely. This video is also public and shareable, so feel free to share with anyone who might be interested!

📖 Pre-Format Rulebook

As mentioned in July’s update, we’ve been finalising the rulebook after a major overhaul and several consistency passes. While layout and formatting are still in progress, we recently shared the pre-format rulebook so you can provide feedback; we’ll use this, alongside the feedback that we’ve incorporated from external editors, blind playtesters, and playthrough participants, to add the finishing touches. Thanks to everyone who has already commented!

A few notes before diving in:

  • This is an unformatted document; we’re looking for feedback on the clarity of rules, rather than visual polish.
  • You’ll see inline references [in square brackets]; these are just placeholders for icons/diagrams and can be ignored.
  • Page references are listed as XX, rather than a number, as they will change during formatting.
  • Images are drafts and may show outdated components – these will be updated and replaced.

👉 Read and comment at https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/g293te678ivjmbk31idip/Terraria-Rulebook-V5.0-Pre-Format.pdf?rlkey=lc7dy87g5yyd0sjynbeg1r917&st=kaltgpje&dl=0

You can comment directly in Dropbox via your browser (our preferred method, since it tracks comments to the right page and allows us to manage feedback in one place) by clicking the icon shown below. A free account is required to do this; if you’d rather not sign up, you can email your feedback to [email protected], please use the subject Line ‘Terraria Rulebook Feedback’ and be sure to include page numbers.

Thanks for helping us make the rulebook as clear and fun as possible!

📦 Shipping and US Tariffs

Since our campaign, global shipping costs have climbed. Rising sea freight and overland delivery rates - driven by tariff uncertainty in the US. and wider international instability - mean we’ve had to adjust shipping charges for all regions, despite working closely with our partners to keep increases as low as possible.

The steepest rises are in the US, where economic conditions, a weak dollar and high inflation have pushed costs up further. To help offset this rise, the incredible team at Re-Logic will be covering US import tariffs on all pledges (at the current tariff rate). We’re deeply grateful for their generosity and their continued support of the Terraria community.

We understand that this can be frustrating, and we promise to keep doing everything we can to manage costs fairly and ensure your rewards reach you safely. You’ll find the updated shipping rates below:

Please note: These prices do not include taxes. All dollar amounts shown are USD. See below for region groupings; some areas are grouped into shipping regions (Europe 1/2 and Asia 1/2; see image below for region grouping information).

We don’t make profit on shipping charges. We want to make sure that your game gets to you in pristine condition, so we’re pre-packaging pledges in the factory with multi-walled boxes, foam infill and corner protectors - we'll be sharing an example of pre-packaged pledges in future updates.

What Happens Next?

Shipping charges (and any applicable taxes) will appear in your BackerKit account from Tuesday 1st September. Please note that this might take up to 48 hours.

Addresses will be locked and cards will be charged for shipping (and any applicable taxes) on Thursday 28th September. Please ensure that your address and payment card details are correct before this date. If you need to make changes, please follow these how-to guides:

We ask backers to update their own details to ensure that we don’t introduce any transcription errors, but if you are unable to make changes after following these guides, please contact BackerKit support at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us or email us at [email protected] .

We’ll send out a reminder via mini-update before we charge cards; you’ll also receive an email from BackerKit.

If you are one of the 150 backers who has not yet filled in your BackerKit survey, this is your last chance. Once we have locked addresses, we will be unable to fulfil pledges for backers with incomplete surveys.

Personal Tax ID Numbers

Since we sent out BackerKit surveys, a small number of regions have started requiring personal tax numbers for parcels delivered from a fulfilment centre outside a backer’s country. If you are a backer in an affected country, you’ll receive an email in the next couple of weeks requesting this information.

📝 Development Update

We are very excited to announce that apart from the rulebook (which is going through layout and graphic design process and discussed above), we have now submitted all of the game’s final files to the manufacturer! This is a massive milestone, and a huge relief, as it means that development is complete and that final production will begin shortly! 😃

Wooden components, miniatures and dice have already been manufactured, so we’ve got a bit of a headstart on the process, and we’re hoping that Gameland will be able to send us some photos of production over the coming weeks so we can share the manufacturing process with you!

You know you’re in the final stretch when the player references are locked in!

As well as the rulebook, the lion’s share of last month’s workload was performing ‘consistency passes’ on the game’s components. In the end, our consistency document contained almost 150 checks that need to be performed on every component. Here’s one that got through the first couple of rounds before being picked up; can you can spot the inconsistency between the cards below? (hint: It’s visual, rather than a text problem spelling, and it’s not related to colour…):

Click the image to reveal the answer!

There were also some additional checks for particularly tricky and/or technical components. For example, all transparent cards in the game have a ‘white layer’ (shown as pink in the GIF below) that is printed first to ensure that artwork areas are opaque – we needed to check that every transparent card’s white layer and art layer matched up exactly.

👀 Final Samples!

Below, you’ll find some of the game’s final components – those which we’ve been waiting for and therefore haven’t been able to share until now!

✨ Foiled Box Lid

Here’s the game’s cover complete with foil-stamped logo! Though it doesn’t seem so in these images, the ‘THE BOARD GAME’ subtitle is quite hard to read when foiled, so we’ve opted to keep that part foil-free for the final cover, but otherwise we think this looks beautiful, and will easily set the Kickstarter versions of the game apart from the retail version.

🏃 Character Pack

Hellstone backers will be receiving the wooden character pack as part of their pledge; below you can see how it can be swapped out for the foam block so that it can be stored inside the game box!

🔨 Foiled Pwnhammer

Here’s the limited-edition, uniquely-numbered, Pwnhammer card in all its foiled glory!

🎇 Foiled Boss Cards

Boss cards have also received the shiny treatment, with some areas spared for readability.

🌟 Promo Pack Boosters

You’ll all be receiving the Developer Promo Pack (containing the Dev Set vanities) and the Seasonal promo pack (combining the Christmas and Halloween Promo cards); here are the boosters that they’ll come in (these samples are unsealed so we can check that all the cards fit inside… they do!)

👑 King Slime Graveyard

Finally, in last month’s update I mentioned that we had a drawer full of rejected samples, including a King Slime graveyard! Some of your were keen to see that, so here are just a few of the iterations we’ve gone through over the past few months…

👋 We’ll Be Back in September!

We’ll be back next month with manufacturing progress (and hopefully pictures!), and before that we'll publish a mini-update reminder about address locking and card charging.

Thank you all for your amazing  support and patience, and thank you to Re-Logic for being fantastic creative partners - we're nearly at the finish line!
