Latest Updates from Our Project:

Failed BackerKit Payments + We're Off to PAX Unplugged!
over 1 year ago – Mon, Dec 02, 2024 at 03:03:57 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

Just a quick check-in with important payment info and a reminder that we'll be out of office for PAX Unplugged between the 3rd and 12th of December.

Failed BackerKit Payments

As per our our last update, we recently charged for any extras added in BackerKit, and as is always the case, a small number of payments didn't go through. If you didn't add anything extra in BackerKit, you won't have been charged so you can disregard the info below.

Failed payments aren't always because of insufficient funds; banks can sometimes flag the charge, or payment details may be incorrect. If this has affected you, don't worry! You'll get an automated email from BackerKit asking you to update your payment details; please do this as soon as possible to secure your order. If your bank flags the charge, you'll need to contact your bank directly. If you are having problems with the BackerKit payment system itself, please email BackerKit Support at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us ; they're more likely to be able to help in this situation as we don't have direct access to the payment system.

🎲 We're Off to PAX Unplugged!

The Paper Fort Games Team will be out of office for PAX Unplugged between the 3rd and 12th of December 🛫. If you'll be there, meet us at booth 4334 to play the game, check out the playmat and pick up a Town Slime balloon!

Please bear with us while we're at the convention; we'll reply to your comments, messages and emails on our return 😊

Final Warning: Surveys Will Be Locked November 27th!
over 1 year ago – Mon, Nov 25, 2024 at 05:00:10 AM

As we mentioned in our update last week, we’re closing the pledge manager in 2 days (27th November), so if you haven’t already, you need to take action now to ensure that you get your rewards.

Once surveys are locked, backers who have not completed them will not be included in our fulfilment plan. In this situation, if you still wanted your rewards, you would be required to pay for an alternate shipping method; this will cost you significantly more than the bulk shipping cost. There is also a chance that there simply won’t be any copies left to send to you as we base our manufacturing quantities on the data we get from completed surveys.

We will be charging cards for any extras added in BackerKit on 28th November, so please ensure that your payment details are correct on BackerKit before this date to prevent failed orders. Please note; this doesn't including shipping charges or value added taxes; these will be charged next year, shortly before fulfillment.

If you can’t find the link to your survey in your emails, you can retrieve it via "Lost your survey?" at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com .

if you have any problems with the pledge manager, please contact BackerKit Support at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us or email us at [email protected] .

🏡 Change of Address

Please note: Locking surveys does not lock your address. We won’t be locking addresses until the games are on their way to fulfilment centres, so if you’re moving house in the near future, don’t worry; you can still visit your survey and change your postal details! Here’s a how-to guide: https://help.backerkit.com/article/638-how-do-i-update-my-shipping-address . We ask backers to update their own addresses where possible as we don't always know the exact format address should be in for other counties.

🍎 AppleID Users

There are still 40 backers who use an AppleID email (@privaterelay.appleid.com) on Kickstarter; as previously mentioned these are not compatible with BackerKit and we need an alternative email address in order to guarantee these pledges. Every AppleID user who hasn’t updated their email has received a direct message via KS containing instructions detailing how to provide an alternative email. If you are having trouble, email us at [email protected] ASAP and we’ll sort it for you.

Don’t Miss Out on the Playmat!

If you wanted to add the World Playmat to your pledge, but haven't yet done so, now’s the time. Just go back to your survey and click the ‘Edit Your Order’ button (shown below). Once you’ve made the change, make sure to click ‘Confirm’.

Don’t delay; get those surveys in!

👀 Character Piece Showcase

One of the biggest artistic challenges in Terraria: The Board Game has been the design of its character pieces (sometimes called ‘meeples’). Wooden player pieces can be found in hundreds of games, but we wanted ours to be unique and faithful to the feel of Terraria.

We’ve been through many stages of experimentation and iteration with these pieces; unlocking the screen-printing of these components via stretch goals provided more design options, but also made locking in the style of the pieces more challenging. After lots of discussion with the Re-Logic team, liaison with manufacturers about printing methods and many sketches by George, the character pieces have been redesigned to be more dynamic and playful while also addressing the limitations of printing onto a piece of wood smaller than a penny!

During the campaign, we planned to include 4 character pieces in the base game; we’ve decided to increase this to 8 as a thank you for your support! 😊 So, Gold pledge backers will receive 8 basic character pieces (shown above) in their game; backers at the Hellstone pledge level will be receiving an additional 32 ‘advanced’ character pieces as part of the character piece pack, including Yoyos, Big Swords, Summoners, Wizards, and more! Here's a selection of the pieces included in that Hellstone pack:

We're still finalising the designs, so colours (including which character is printed onto which colour of wood) and small details may change, but we wanted to show you how far we've come from the pieces in our campaign video!

✨ Updated King Slime Miniature

In our last update, we mentioned that the key system for King Slime needed some alterations; we recently received the latest sample and we’re happy to report that the keys are now working! This is a 3D printed prototype, but it does give us a feel for what the transparent plastic might look like in the final casting.

🎨 Even More Equipment!

George has now finished all of the art for equipment in the game; we are *so* happy with what he’s come up with! It’s a huge challenge to reinterpret sprites and we think he’s done a wonderful job; here are a few of our favourites from the latest batch!

From left to right: Ruby Hook, Demon Scythe, Imp Staff, The Bee’s Knees, Cascade, Blowpipe and Enchanted Boomerang!

📃 Game Development

Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:

  • A change to the game’s starting decks to incorporate an attack-boosting card; ‘Charge’
  • Further Boss balancing, including simplification of Boss behaviours
  • Multiple small equipment effect alterations
  • Consistency updates to terminology across cards
  • Rulebook update/ overhaul (in progress)

We’ve also received a ‘white sample’ of the game’s components; this is a blank copy of the game’s components that allows us to check sizes, quality and quantity of all of the game’s components. We’ll share more about this in next month’s update!

🎲 Play Terraria: The Board Game at PAX Unplugged

From 6th to 8th December, we’ll be at PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, PA. Visit us at booth 4334 to play the game, check out the playmat and pick up a Town Slime balloon! We can’t wait to see you there 😊

👋 Back In December!

That’s it for this month; please don’t forget to complete your survey before November 27th if you haven’t already! If you have any questions, feel free to drop us an email at [email protected].

Next month we’ll have a bumper update, including a report from PAXU, Crimson biome art and a Christmas Promo Pack spotlight.

As always, thank you so much for your support; bye for now, Terrarians!

October 2024 Update: Pledge Manager Extended + Essen Recap + Halloween Promo Pack Spotlight + Equipment and House Art!
over 1 year ago – Wed, Oct 30, 2024 at 02:56:25 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

October has been jam-packed with conventions, playtesting and game development. This month, we’ve got an Essen recap, a spotlight on the Halloween promo pack unlocked during the campaign, and more fantastic art assets to share with you, so let’s jump right in! 😊

📢 Pledge Manager Deadline: Extended Until November 27th

90% of backers have now completed their pledge manager surveys. To ensure we give the remaining 10% of backers as much chance as possible to get their games, we’ve decided to allow 4 more weeks before we lock surveys. Surveys will be locked on 27th November and after this time you will no longer be able to update your order. We will be charging cards for any extras added in BackerKit on 28th November, so please ensure that your payment details are correct on BackerKit before this date to prevent failed orders. Final reminders will be published in November’s Kickstarter update and also as a separate mini-update on November 25th.

If you can’t find the link to your survey in your emails, you can retrieve it via "Lost your survey?" at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com .

You can find an updated reminder of the estimated pledge manager milestones below. You’ll be warned before each milestone so you have a chance to review your order and payment details.

If you have any problems with the pledge manager, please contact BackerKit Support at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us or email us at [email protected] .

🎲 Essen Spiel Recap

At the start of October, we were showing Terraria: The Board Game at Essen Spiel, the world’s largest tabletop game convention. Over 200,000 attendees visited the show; thank you so much to everyone who stopped by our booth to chat with us about the game, to play a demo and to see the playmat in person! It was a wonderful chance to meet backers of the Kickstarter, fans of the game and also board gamers who had never heard of Terraria 😃.

The Paper Fort Games booth team at Essen Spiel 2024!

Our demo table was packed from open to close on all 4 days of the convention, and it was extremely rewarding to watch attendees explore the game. Here’s an excerpt from a review left by a player of the demo:

“…I played the demo at Essen this weekend- INCREDIBLY fun experience, even with 3 other strangers. The developer was clearly passionate about taking the spirit of terraria and translating it into boardgame format … The best part of all, is no matter which choice you make you will still be progressing the game forward and generating value to the team … Many actions you make, including exploring can be highly rewarding. I don’t know if the path that my team took would have resulted in victory (honestly, I don't care) but subsequent games would force us to be a little more efficient with our actions to accomplish objectives and make progress toward a victory. Taking the first action was intimidating at first with all of the freedom of choice, but after you use the first or second action point it clicks…”

Thanks to @Yakos on BGG for uploading this picture of a game in progress at Essen!

If you live in the US, we’ll be at PAX Unplugged in December; we’ll be sharing more details in November’s update so keep an eye out! 👀

🔥 Playmat Reminder

A big hit at our booth this year was the game’s playmat; we managed to get a couple of samples printed with the double-sided art and it got *a lot* of oohs and aahs from fans! It’s big, it’s bright, and it’s great quality! 😍

Here’s a reminder of the art; one side with the game UI and the other with our Terrarian vs WoF art piece; perfect as a desk mat or play surface for other games.

If you haven’t yet added the playmat to your pledge, you’ve still got time! 😀 Just go back to your survey and click the ‘Edit Your Order’ button (shown below). Once you’ve made the change, make sure to click ‘Confirm’.

👻 Component Spotlight: Halloween Promo Pack!

As this is our October update and Halloween is almost upon us, it seemed a great time to show you some more of the Halloween Promo Pack, unlocked as a stretch goal during the Kickstarter campaign!

🎃 Pumpkin Armor: Gourd-ness me; don’t you look fetching! Now we know that technically, this armor isn’t a Halloween item in the videogame, but it seemed right to put it in this pack! This set provides a tasty boost to your base defence, but also grants the ability to re-roll your lowest value attack die once per turn; perfect for having a second go at a pesky enemy.

🥚 Rotten Egg: What’s that smell? That’s right; it’s everyone’s favourite antisocial consumable! Discard this card to perform a free medium-range attack (or maybe that should be a free-range medium attack?), rolling 2 four-sided dice.

🧤 Bladed Glove: Is that you, Freddy? This short-range weapon is cheap and speedy; just a single action point to roll 3 four-sided dice. Terrarian trivia buffs might know that despite its appearance, the Bladed Glove is classified as a sword in the videogame and as such will occupy that slot on your character board.

These Halloween items will be available in your games via the Goodie Bag, an optional card that you can add to the base game chest cards.

🎨 New Art: Equipment and Houses!

George has recently been working his way through the game’s equipment; here are some of our favourite pieces!

From left to right: Gold Bow, War Axe of the Night, Blood Butcherer, Dark Lance, Slime Staff, Ice Blade and Tendon Bow

We’ve also been working with Re-Logic to perfect the game’s houses; you’ll build these (placing their tiles into your world) to unlock new crafting stations and powerup tokens throughout the game. We wanted the earliest houses to look basic and later ones to be more ornate, representing the way that players’ base building skills (and the items available to them) develop over the course of the game.

What’s your favourite detail in the houses? Let us know in the comments!

📑 Game Development

Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:

-Simplification of debuffs; these are now represented by tokens rather than cards and have an inbuilt 2-turn cooldown system.
-Adjustments to objectives to preserve early game momentum
-Boss behaviour alterations
-Further quality of life changes to the character boards, Bestiary/ crafting menu and minimap console.

Here’s a photo from a recent in-house playtest with Luke from fellow Nottingham-based design studio Iconiq Games (creators of the official Saw boardgame; very Halloween-appropriate!). A timely yoyo strike on a weakened King Slime, a mad dash to the ocean and a perfectly-placed pylon secured a victory! 💪

That’s it for this month; please don’t forget to complete your survey before November 27th if you haven’t already!

We’ll be back in November with more, including updated character pieces and details of where to find us at PAX Unplugged 😊

As always, thank you so much for your support!

September 2024 Update: Playmat Art + Boss Miniature Video + Development News and Lasers! + Developer Set Art + Meet Us At Essen Spiel!
over 1 year ago – Wed, Sep 25, 2024 at 04:07:35 AM

Hello Terrarians! 🌳

The last month has flown by at Paper Fort Games HQ thanks to ongoing game development, playtesting, art production and convention preparation 💨

In today’s update, we’re sharing development news, playmat and Developer Set art, videos of our latest Boss miniature prototypes and a look at how we’ve recently been using lasers as part of the design process. Enjoy! 😀

🚨 Pledge Manager Reminder

85% of backers have completed their pledge manager surveys so far; thank you to everyone who has filled theirs in! If you haven’t, please fill in your survey ASAP; it’s vital for us to get your game to you and only takes a few minutes.

If you can’t find the link to your survey in your emails, you can find it via "Lost your survey?" at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com .

For a reminder of the estimated pledge manager milestones, click here. You’ll be warned before each milestone so you have a chance to review your order and payment details.

🔥 Playmat Art

In our last update, we shared George’s detailed black and white sketches of the Terrarian vs Wall of Flesh art piece that will be featured on the full-art side of the game’s playmat. He’s been hard at work bringing that scene to life and we’re very excited to reveal the full-colour art below!

Here’s the process from first sketch to final art:

We’ve also been updating the other side of the playmat; the one that helps you to set up the game. It features pre-printed starting biome tiles and spaces for NPCs, objectives and more. As you’ll be building your world on this side of the mat, we’ve opted to keep it relatively simple, so it doesn't detract from important gameplay information:

We can’t wait to see a physical version of this playmat; a sample is being produced right now and we're hoping to have it at our booth during Essen Spiel (more about that below), so swing by to see it if you’re there! 👀

If you haven’t yet added the playmat to your pledge, you’ve still got time! 😊 Just go back to your survey and click the ‘Edit Your Order’ button (shown below). Once you’ve made the change, be sure to click ‘Confirm’.

✨ Boss Miniatures

The latest prototypes of our boss miniatures recently arrived at the office; in the video below, you can see examples of the key system that allows boss parts to be removed/ swapped out during boss battles.

King Slime isn’t quite there yet; the transparent material looks pretty good but his key system needs further improvement. Also, the minis in this video are just spray painted; these won’t be their final colours as they will be cast in specific colour-matched plastics we have chosen for each boss.

The great thing about high-quality 3D printing is that we can try these models out, make changes and make sure they work before committing to making the final casting moulds.

💥 Game Development (and Lasers!)

Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:

  • Addition of a ‘threat’ track to speed up the game, incentivise Boss engagement and pave the way for threat level-dependent behaviour/ events in future expansions.
  • Enhancements to the player board layout and shape.
  • Implementation of an enemy retaliation mechanism.
  • Addition of low-level consumables cards available to buy from the merchant NPC.
  • Simplification of NPC spawning criteria.
  • Improvement of the deluxe bestiary/ crafting menu layout for quicker, easier lookup.

Most of the changes above are mechanism-based, but some (like changes to the player board and the bestiary/ crafting menu) are physical. Previously we relied on manufacturers sending updated punchboard components, but Chris has recently been learning how to use an industrial laser cutter to make our own prototype punchboard components. No more cutting things out by hand or waiting for updated components to be shipped to us; we can now make a change, try it out and adjust as necessary within a very short timeframe. It’s a game-changer!

👨‍💻 Developer Sets

George recently finished all of the Developer vanity sets for the game; here they are in all their painted glory! We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Re-Logic team for letting us include them, and for the developers’ feedback on their sets.

👋 Meet us at Essen Spiel!

From October 3rd to 6th, we’ll be showing Terraria: The Board Game at Essen Spiel in Germany; the world’s largest tabletop game convention. If you’re coming to the show, we’d love to meet you; please stop by Hall 4, booth 4C430 to check out the latest version of the game (we’re between Hall 5 and the Galleria; click here to see a map).

We’ll be back in October with another update; in the meantime, if you have any problems with the pledge manager, please contact BackerKit Support at https://terraria-board-game.backerkit.com/faq#contact-us or email us at [email protected] .

As always, thank you for your support!
